The problem is not that you are selling the rights to publish and exploit. That's perfectly fine and dandy. The problem is that by selling exclusive ownership of your work, you are handing over the right not to publish.
Yes, owning your own IP wont magically make you money. But hey, neither does anything else.
The present problem is actually that there are publishers who will let you keep your IP simply because they intend to keep the audience. The audience is actually much more valuable. Do you really think that microsoft is doing indie devs a favour by letting them strengthen its play to own the social network and money of a large number of gamers? This guy isn't even up to date.
